Logitech is synonymous with great computer speakers. We last reviewed their Z337, a 2.1 bluetooth setup.
Today we have a quick look & listen at the Z906, their top-of-the line 5.1 system.
Hey, you say, didn’t that come out in 2011?
Indeed. And surprisingly, Logitech haven’t brought out a successor.
That can mean two things:
It might mean that Logi thinks nothing can top this. Highly unlikely.
Or that they’re close to announcing something this good but without wires. Hmmm…
So, since the Z906 is a “blast from the past” so to speak, you’ll find plenty of great reviews on this system. Most reviewers agree that it is a great audio system and with 1000 Watts peak/500 Watts RMS power it delivers a potent surround sound that is THX Certified.
That THX logo is stamped on all the speakers and this certification is a rigorous set of industry standards for audio reproduction. The sound you hear is exactly as the audio engineer intended for it to sound while he was recording and mixing.
I’ll add my two cents (or 2 dB) to the conversation with a 6 year perspective from when the Z906 first stirred the airwaves.
For starters, these speakers are built to last. And that’s great because they’re sounding beautiful and that matte look will never tire.
The sound from these speakers is highly customisable through the Control Console which is directly attached to the subwoofer.
And a small remote control gives you another reason to not get up from the couch.
There’s plenty of connectivity to hook up other systems: PC, tuners, DVD or PVR. You can select from 6 input sources to feed the 6 speakers.
Yet, what’s missing is important to me: HDMI. I need that for my Samsung Blu-ray system, which ironically dates also from 2011. There are of course also other less elegant ways to connect with that player, but HDMI is easier and provides the best quality.
The biggest thing missing is of course Bluetooth. That’s not surprising for a 6 year old system but not for today’s market.
These days we stream just about everything from Spotify so that Bluetooth connectivity is highly desirable.
And to make things easier still: we need wireless connectivity to at least the rear speakers and preferably to all the speakers.
It’s a huge eyesore to have the 7.6m long tripwires lying around in your lounge or going up the walls. It’s hard to conceal these speaker cables and it would make setup and placement so much easier if no leads were needed…
Having said this, if these two suggestions were implemented Logitech could announce the Z1006 keeping the rest of the system intact. And it would be a great system for at least another 6 years…
If you need an awesome surround sound system for your gaming or theatre AND my suggested improvements for the next model don’t worry you, there are worse ways to spend 549 buckaroos. That’s still the official RRP but you’ll find them online for around the $350 mark.
And that’s great value.
